A convicted serial killer who now claims to have killed two women in Vermont and cannibalized his victims has shown police where he buried bodies outside his grandpa's Wellfleet retirement home, according to a report.
Hadden Clark, 47, who pointed out his burial sites Saturday, ate his victims because he ``wanted to become the women and girls he killed,'' the Cape Cod Times reported, quoting police sources.
Clark may have killed as many as 11 females including children, sources told the paper.
He led police to the sites only after they placated him by buying him some women's underwear at K-Mart, the paper said.
Hampered by snow and bitter cold weather over the weekend, state police investigators will continue this week to probe the land that Clark pinpointed. ``Clark definitely provided us with information that compels us to get back to certain locations in Wellfleet as soon as possible,'' state police Sgt. James Plath said. Kicked out of the Navy after doctors labeled him a paranoid schizophrenic 15 years ago, Clark now is serving a combined 70 years in a Maryland prison for killing a 6-year-old girl and a 23-year-old Harvard graduate. Last week, he led Maryland police to the body of the child he stabbed to death, Michele Dorr. She had disappeared on Memorial Day from her family's yard in Silver Spring in 1986. Clark was convicted of her murder last October. Clark told police he abducted two other victims in Vermont and buried them on Cape Cod. He spent several summers living with his grandparents on a 7-acre property on South Pamet Point Road that has since changed owners.
According to the Cape Cod Times, Clark worked at Cape restaurants where co-workers claim he drank blood from fresh meat.
Brought from prison to the Pamet Point land on Saturday under a court order, Clark became uncooperative and demanded police buy him women's clothing before he pointed out his graves.
Officers made a run to K-mart for a skirt, bra, panties and stockings to get Clark to help with the investigation, the paper said.
He rejected the skirt because it was too big but accepted the underwear. State Police investigators were not available for comment yesterday.
A search on the land last month by Massachusetts and Maryland police found women's jewelry, including items linked to Laura Houghteling, the 23-year-old Bethesda woman who disappeared in October 1992. Houghteling, like Door, was later found buried near her home in Maryland.
Investigators in Vermont have not linked Clark's claims to any specific homicide or missing persons cases, Vermont State Police Lt. Bruce Lang said yesterday.
``These two women were hitchhikers or runaways from Vermont,'' Lang said. ``We don't have anything to correlate with the claims.''
Clark also was taken to Connecticut Sunday where investigators questioned him about women who disappeared in that state during the 1980s.
Homicide investigators in Rhode Island and Pennsylvania also want to interview Clark about unsolved killings of women in those states.
In Massachusetts, investigators showed him pictures of missing women and girls, including a blond 9-year-old named Sarah Pryor.
Pryor disappeared in 1985 while walking near her Wayland home.
Clark did not pick her photo, the Cape Cod paper reported.
At the time of her abduction 15 years ago, the serial killer's parents lived near Wayland, the report said.
A piece of Pryor's skull was discovered near her home four years ago and her family held a funeral for the child in 1998.
It was unclear last night if police showed Clark a picture of Cathy Malcolmson, 16, who disappeared in Stow on Aug. 13, 1985.
Clark's current round of revealing his victim's resting places began with talks to a fellow inmate.
The inmate told prison authorities that he could persuade Clark to speak because the serial killer believes his friend is Jesus Christ, sources told the Cape Cod Times.
The inmate, who is also a convicted murderer, accompanied Clark to Wellfleet Saturday.
According to the newspaper report, Clark comes from a family of disturbed men. His brother, Bradfield Clark, killed a woman in California and dismembered her body. He is now serving time for second-degree murder.
Clark's criminal history dates back to 1988 when he sought revenge on a landlord with a prank involving fishheads and stole handbags from a ladies choir in Bethesda in 1989, the report said.
